We often hear in the media the new phrase (coined by the bank bailouts of 2008-2009) of organizations becoming “too big to fail”. From banks to automobile makers, it seems a lot of the cornerstones of American industry fall under this category.
However, I was thinking the other day – what nonprofits are too big to fail?
Could we survive without Susan G. Komen?
How about National Public Radio?
Would America be better off if the Boys and Girls club failed?
Which organizations do you think if push came to shove, either the donating public or the federal government should bailout? My votes are for public health organizations, like Planned Parenthood, and school-based organizations, like Teach For America.
